The Farewell Circuit profiled in the City Pages

7 Oct

City Page’s Michael Walsh recently penned a rather insightful two-pager on The Farewell Circuit – pointing out everything from their politics to their songwriting prowess.

O’Brien, and the rest of the Farewell Circuit, are frankly not the cliché I pegged them to be. Their two most recent recordings, the 2009 album Birdless Sky and the 2010 EP Brother’s Eyes are a melancholy batch of indie pop songs in the vein of Copeland, Radiohead, and Death Cab for Cutie. But dig a little deeper and you will find a collection of passionately intimate, angry, pleading songs about collapsing worldviews and insistent, burgeoning ideology.

808 at the Future of Music Coalition Policy Summit

30 Aug

The Future of Music Coalition Policy Summit is a terrific event that I have attended a number of times over the years – and the content never ceases to impress. From George Clinton’s opinions on sampling in 2006, to a ravenous debate between major label heads and independent music producers in 2008 (I should really find the audio from that – it was awesome), there is no better place to get a finger on the pulse of the industry side of the music industry.

This year, I’ll be joining musician/professor/lawyer John Strohm, Steve Morona from Educause, and Georgetown IP expert Heidi Wachs on a panel about how college students access music and media online (or offline, for that matter). From the description:

Many times, a band’s most valuable fans are college students. With disposable incomes, pockets full of gadgets, living in a highly networked environment, it’s easy for college students to ingest music. This mix makes college
campuses the music industry’s best customer base, or its worst source of copyright infringement. How are today’s college-age students accessing music? Which music services are they using? On what devices are they listening? And, what business models would they find attractive. role do universities and the government have in both encouraging lawful behavior and imposing deterrents to reduce unauthorized filesharing and bandwidth hogging?

Should be an interesting conversation.  Other speakers at the event include T. Bone Burnett, Hank Shocklee (Public Enemy), Damian Kulash (OK Go), and, well… the list goes on. Read more on their website. Hope to see you there.
